オクナの仲間は86種がアフリカを中心に分布しています。本種は南ア原産の常緑ですが、花後にできる実が緑から熟すと黒くなるところから本種を英名でミッキーマウスプラントと呼び親しまれています。
最近ではより一般的なオクナ・セルラタもこの名前で呼ばれています。

Genus Ochna comprises 86 spp. and is native to
Africa(incl.Mascarenes) and Asia. O.thomasiana is natibe evergreen tree in S.Africa. This species and O.serrulata ehich is widely cultivated are called Micky mouse plant. Flowers are yellow and they produce some seeds. The seeds change the color from green to black. Black seeds look like eyes of mouse.
