日本特産の多年草で、東北地方～近畿、四国地方に分布しています。例えば山梨県の八ヶ岳では別荘地そばの暗い林の中で花が見られます。また東京都青梅市の御岳山（みたけやま929m）の頂上付近には大群落があり、「レンゲショウマまつり」なるものが８～９月初旬まで開催されます。花は独特の形ですが、ハスの花に似ているのでレンゲ（蓮華）の名を貰いました。現在、白花も開花しています。

Anemonopsis macrophylla is endemic to Japan’s Honshu(Touhoku-Kinki and Shikoku Is.). Genus Anemonopsis (Ranunclaceae) contains only one species. It is found in shady forest areas. This is one of the most beautiful and elegant woodland plant. The flower resembles small lotus, so Japanese name is Renge Shoma/Meaning is lotus-Astilbe (Saxifragaceae) . In August and September Renge-Shoma festival is held in Mt.Mitakeyama (929m), Ohme City,Tokyo.
