ドラゴンフルーツ（ピターヤ）、ピタヤ
日本ではサンカクサボテン類の果物を、ドラゴンフルーツの名で親しんでいます。一見英名のように思えますが、ベトナムから日本に輸出する際に、中国名の「火竜果」を英語に訳した商品名です。つる性植物で長さ10ｍにもなり、行燈仕立の鉢植えの株のイメージとは少し違います。果実の色は黄、赤紫、ピンクなど品種で異なり、一番甘いのはピンクだそうです。果肉も白、赤紫があります。花は白色、夜咲きで、香りがあり長さ約25cm、直径約15cm、月下美人の花を二回り大きくしたようで見事です。咲くやこの花館では夏の開花時期には昼夜逆転をさせて昼間に開花をご覧いただける日もあり、開花した際にはHPでお知らせしています。また、完熟したドラゴンフルーツはツアーの際に試食いただけることもあり、花も実も楽しめます。
A pitaya or dragonfruit is natve to Central America and northern South America. It is 5～10m long climber which belongs to cactus family. The scented, nocturnal flowers are about 25 cm long, and about 15 cm across. Pitaya usually refers to fruit of the genus Stenocereus, while pitahaya or dragon fruit refers to fruit of the genus Selenicereus (formerly Hylocereus). These fruits are commonly known in English as "dragon fruit", a name used since 1963, apparently resulting from the leather-like skin and prominent scaly spikes on the fruit exterior named after Chinese fruit name.
